Cardinal L. Gontz, 85, of Shippensburg died on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at Chambersburg Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 10, 1926, in Scotland, Pa., a son of the late Harper and Grace Skinner Gontz.

Cardinal was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, enlisting on three separate occasions, and was honorably discharged for the final time on April 15, 1960. On May 15, 1954, he married Ms. Barbara Hoover, in Hagerstown, Md.

Cardinal was employed at the Letterkenny Army Depot, working as a parts expediter and retiring in 1985. As a hobby, Cardinal owned and operated his own toy store, called "Cardinal's Toy Store" and was a collector of many things like baseball cards, coins and Matchbox Cars. He liked to look for such things at yard sales and flea markets.

He was a member and former treasurer of the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Shippensburg, and belonged to many of the area social clubs. He was a member and past commander for many years of Durff-Kuhn VFW Post 6168, a member of Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post 223 and the Minnequa Social Club, all of Shippensburg, AMVETS Post 224 and BPO Elks Lodge 600, both of Chambersburg, and the Eagles Club of Waynesboro.

Cardinal is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara; two daughters, Deborah K. ‎(Stephen)‎ Pye of West Grove and Brenda R. ‎(William)‎ Oller of Waynesboro; two sisters, Edna Kieffer of Chambersburg and Goldie McIntire of Fayetteville; two grandchildren, Jennifer L. ‎(Todd)‎ Hendrickson of Nottingham and Christopher W. Pye of Indianapolis; three great-grandchildren, Breann K. Zimmerman and Brooke and Brady Hendrickson; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Shippensburg. The Rev. Barbara Hutchinson will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

A viewing will be Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc.
